Types of GRE Exam

There are two types of GRE Exam; GRE General Test and GRE Subject test. The table given below shall reveal the details of the two test.

  • There is no maximum or minimum age limit for the exam.
  • Candidates should have a valid passport at the time of registration and test date. Indian candidates can also use Aadhar card as a part of identity proof during the registration process.
  • Although there is no official requirement for qualification, candidates are expected to possess a graduate degree in any discipline from a recognised university.

GRE Registration

There are a few things to keep in mind while registering for the GRE exam:

  • The information that candidates provide at the time of registration must match with the passport. The testing authorities can prohibit candidates from entering the center in case of discrepancies.
  • Candidates are expected to check the test format in their suitable location before registering the slot.
  • It is advised that candidates read the policies of the exam before registration.
  • There are multiple ways in which candidates can register for GRE exam:
    1. Online registration
    2. Phone registration
    3. Fax registration
    4. Mail registration

GRE Online Registration Process

Given below are the steps to be followed to complete the online registration process of GRE exam:

Phone Registration

  • Candidates can call the Regional Registration Center (RRC) for registering for the exam.
  • 91-124-4147700 is the phone number for registration.
  • The phone call must be made at least two business days before the preferred test date.
  • Candidates shall receive confirmation number, test center address and reporting time while making the call for registration.
  • Candidates can then pay the exam fee online through JCB, American Express, Master Card, Discover, or Visa card, or Debit Card.

GRE Document Checklist

When registering for a GRE General Test, the test takers will be required to provide identification (ID) information. The test takers must enter the first and last name exactly as it appears on the primary ID document (excluding accents) that they plan to present on the day of the test.

When reporting for a test appointment at home or at a test facility, all test takers must provide valid and appropriate identification. The identification documents should be current and available on the day of the test.

ID requirements of candidates depend on their mode of examination and citizenship. A “Passport“[ with name, photograph and signature] is a primary ID document accepted for a test admission.

ID documents must meet all of the following requirements, with a few exceptions. Each ID must :

  • be an original document as photocopied documents are not acceptable.
  • be a physical ID; electronic ID issued to a mobile phone, or any other electronic device is not acceptable
  • be a government-issued national/state/province identity card that is recognized by the country in which you are a citizen or permanent resident
  • be valid; expired documents (bearing expiration dates that have passed) are not acceptable
  • have the first and last name exactly (excluding accents) as it was when registering for the test
  • include a recent, recognizable photograph
  • include test takers signature (the name and signature on the ID document must match).

GRE Mode of Examination

GRE Scores

  • Candidates who have taken the GRE exams can access scores by logging into the GRE account 10-15 days after the test date.
  • Once the results are declared, candidates shall receive an email from ETS about the availability of the scores.
  • The total GRE scores are 340 and the minimum score is 260. The table given below shows the score range according to the official website.

  • The GRE subject test scores are calculated on a scale of 200 to 990 with an increment scale variation of 10 points.
  • The composite score mentioned is the sum of the verbal and quant sections. The analytical writing section scores are presented separately.
  • GRE scores are valid for a period of five years from the date of the exam.

How To Crack GRE Exam?

1. Tackling Multiple Blanks

  • There is no need for candidates to answer multiple-blank text completions in order. It can be started with the easiest blank also.
  • All Questions Are Worth the Same Point Amount! in terms of test strategy, it’s not worth it to spend tons of time agonizing over a three-blank question when you still have simpler questions left.
  • Use process of elimination
  • Read through the passage once you've chosen the answer

2. Eliminating Answer Choices

  • Sentence equivalence questions allows candidates to choose two words for one blank from a list of six.
  • Candidates must try to choose words that make sense in the sentence and eliminate the words that do not make sense.

3. Mapping the Reading Comprehension

  • Candidates must prepare the questions from comprehension by making notes. This shall help to make a passage map that will engage in active reading.
  • GRE is open book, so if candidates research in detail a passage, it can help to answer many test questions

4. Study Smart

  • Candidates are advised to develop a systematic approach to realise areas where they need to work hard and need improvement.
